The Flicks is going the solar route.

The Boise movie theater at 646 Fulton St. will reduce its energy usage about 25 percent annually with the installation of 96 solar panels on the roof of the theater and adjacent law firm.  General contractor Altenergy Incorporated started design and engineering work for the solar panel installation in January and will finish up in March.

Altenergy Incorporated Branch Manager David Whitaker said the return on investment for most solar projects is about seven years. Flicks Owner Carole Skinner declined to say how much the project cost. She said a trip to Europe with her husband Rick, inspired her to consider adding a solar component to her building.

“We couldn’t believe how many solar panels we saw everywhere,” Carole Skinner said.

The Flicks opened in the former hardware store building in 1984 and was remodeled in 1989. Both buildings together take up about 10,000 square feet.
