INL’s Rory Kennedy named American Nuclear Society fellow

Dr. Rory Kennedy, director of the Nuclear Science User Facilities at the Idaho National Laboratory, has been named a Fellow by the American Nuclear Society. He will be recognized for the honor at the ANS 2020 Virtual Winter Meeting, Nov. 16-19. The Fellow designation is the highest membership grade ANS can bestow on an individual and acknowledges outstanding leadership, professional accomplishments, and service to the profession.

Kennedy has served as NSUF director since 2014, providing strategic direction and leadership of the program’s priorities, policies and initiatives. He previously served as the national technical lead for Metallic Fuels Technologies Development within the Advanced Fuels Campaign of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fuel Cycle Research and Development program. In this role, he performed strategic planning and executed collaborations with national laboratories, commercial and international partners including the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute, the European Commission, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development – Nuclear Energy Agency.

He began working for INL, then Argonne National Laboratory-West, in 1996 as a staff chemist after spending seven years at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Germany. He earned a doctorate in inorganic chemistry and master’s degree in chemistry from Northwestern University, and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Colorado State University. Kennedy has experience in inorganic chemistry, materials science, properties of materials, and program management. He has published 41 peer-reviewed articles, 33 conference proceedings, and 59 internal and external documents and technical reports. He has been honored with an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellowship, an Argonne National Laboratory Director’s Award, two Argonne National Laboratory Pacesetter Awards, and an INL Exceptional Contribution Award.
