Idaho Democratic lawmakers have announced their delivery of a letter to Gov. Brad Little requesting a special legislative session to consider a six-month tax holiday on gasoline. This follows a recent AAA report that Idaho’s average gas price could hit $5 in the near future. If the special session is enacted, one bill would be considered. Democratic lawmakers noted in their announcement that the state is projecting a $1.3 billion surplus and a six-month gas tax holiday, or its equivalent rebate, would cost the state a projected $180 million.

“Idahoans are hurting,” the letter reads. In 2022, families across this state have watched prices for ordinary, every-day goods increase substantially, which is straining their ability to keep up with the cost of living.”

“It is becoming more expensive to drive to work while at the same time basic needs are costing more,” the letter also reads. “Taking this action in the coming weeks would give everyday Idahoans relief at the gas pump totaling 32 cents a gallon.”
