Dave Sherman holds both a Bachelor and Master of Science in Civil Engineering and is a licensed professional engineer. In his 12 years since graduating, he has grown quickly from a staff engineer to project manager and is now the business leader responsible for the Boise office of WSP USA, and supports an extension of the team in Helena, Montana.
Sherman launched the new engineering office for WSP in November 2021 in Boise and grew to 39 employees in 27 months. After providing and leading engineering and consulting support for more than 50 projects across five states, Sherman was elected by his peers to serve as an officer on the most active engineering advocacy board in Idaho. Additionally, he provided world-class experts to present at Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce and The Pacific NorthWest Economic Region conferences, and developed and instructed three unique elective courses for the College of Engineering at Boise State University.
“My philosophy is people are generous and want to help you, so you should ask them to,” he said. “Do hard things to stand out. Never discount how much of your good fortune is due to chance, and work hard to be prepared to make the most of good things when they happen to you.”
He continues to manage projects while driving the business development and client engagement for the Idaho practice, developing a reputation as a true leader through his passion for engineering and people, natural charisma and an empathy that breeds trust from all those who cross his path.
“He has been the primary force behind the growth of our office from two people to 39 people in just over two years,” said Lorelei Williams, P.E., senior vice president of WSP USA. “He has been able to do this because people want to work with Dave. He commands respect through his strong ethics and real interest in every person that he works with.”
Outside of work, Sherman has actively volunteered since 2015 at Alberton’s Boise Open and at Parkridge Elementary School for their Halloween carnival. He also participated in Habitat for Humanity this year in Boise. Though not community service in the truest sense, Sherman’s more than four years of service as an adjunct faculty instructor is one more way that he invests his time to help better the community where he lives and works.
“Dave takes every opportunity to support and mentor those around him,” said Williams. “He is cognizant of the office team and connects individuals to resources and learning to grow their skillsets. He supports growth of the students that he teaches and has an eye for those individuals who want to learn and challenge themselves.”
Sherman loves fishing, hunting and spending time outdoors with his wife and two children.
“Dave’s contributions to the transportation industry in Idaho and Montana have been nothing short of remarkable,” said Kimberly Talbot, senior marketing coordinator at WSP. “With over a decade of experience in civil engineering, Dave has consistently exhibited a passion for excellence and a drive to solve complex challenges. His visionary approach to infrastructure projects has not only improved the efficiency of transportation systems but has also positively impacted communities across both states.”
Sherman also completed Leadership Boise commitments, with graduation pending in May.
