Laura Davidson developed a value of sustainability, science and design as a child, growing up with parents who met while working on solar batteries and who turned their house into an experimental lab of sorts where they tested various sustainable technologies and emerging practices.

“From solar water heaters, a passive sunroom and a little backyard wetland at home … my fascination was captured and my passion for the environment, both natural and built, has only grown since,” she said.

Over the years, she tagged along with her father, a mechanical engineer, to conferences and collegiate competitions hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy. Meanwhile, her mother, a chemical and environmental engineer, imparted a passion for science, technology, engineering and math.

“She never doubted her place at the table and I’m incredibly thankful I grew up being comfortable in spaces traditionally less occupied by women, and grateful women are more represented in these industries today thanks to the trailblazing of her generation and even earlier generations,” Davidson said.

The support from her parents led Davidson to earn a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Cornell University and to take on her current role as an architect and associate at CSHQA, Idaho’s oldest architecture firm. Additionally, Davidson is the president-elect of the Central Idaho Section of the Institute of Architects (AIA), where she previously served as the secretary and treasurer.

Leah McMilllan, an architect at Mill Creek Architecture, LLC, and former AIA Central Idaho president, calls Davidson a true leader, a thoughtful designer and an advocate for architects.

“She is not only an architect, but she also holds two other certifications that promote design for climate change, including energy and water-saving measures, and using products that are locally sourced,” McMilllan said. “Her knowledge makes her a wonderful asset to her firm, as is shown by the quality of projects that she leads and assists with at CSHQA.”

Scot Hopkins, an associate principal at CSHQA, said Davidson is an extraordinary architect whose work embodies creativity and innovation.

“Beyond her technical prowess, Laura is a natural leader and collaborator. She excels at fostering strong relationships with clients, consultants and team members, guiding projects with diplomacy, professionalism and a keen eye for detail,” Hopkins said. “Her ability to inspire and motivate others has been instrumental in the success of numerous projects within our firm.”

Looking to the future, Davidson plans to continue her work on affordable housing and permanent supportive housing and to incorporate sustainable practices in each project she takes on.

“I’m passionate about the potential architecture has for social impact,” Davidson said. “I feel very fortunate when I’m able to work on projects that contribute to the wellness of the occupants and society in a similar way.”
