Founded in 1958 by Cecil Lovell as Moscow Building Supply, the company has spent more than six decades growing its reputation for outstanding customer service, superior product selection, and giving back to the community. Today it operates as Moscow and Pullman Building Supply and continues to be the go-to home improvement and building supply center serving the Palouse region.
Now under the ownership of siblings Tyler and Katie Garrett, who are the third generation of family to own and operate the company, the Moscow store employs around 120 team members.
Tyler said, “Our involvement in the building materials industry has always been rooted in a commitment to serving our community’s needs. Over the years, we’ve seen our role evolve – from simply supplying materials to becoming a trusted partner in construction and home improvement. We saw the need for a local resource that could offer personalized service, knowledgeable staff, and a one-stop shop experience in an industry dominated by big-box stores. That’s a need we continue to still fill today.”
Specializing in everything from lumber and hardware to tools, paint, plumbing, electrical and seasonal products, Moscow and Pullman Building Supply serves professional contractors, do-it-yourself homeowners and everyone in between. The company also offers value-added services like delivery, tool and equipment rentals, material takeoffs, design services, installed services, special orders, and personalized product guidance.
As for what sets them apart – Tyler shares that it’s their local roots and deep understanding of the customer base they’re serving.
“We’re not a faceless chain — we know our customers by name, we understand the local market, and we invest in our people and our communities,” he explained. “Our team members are some of the very best in their field and are experienced, well-trained, and empowered to make decisions that prioritize customer satisfaction. With over 65 years of history, we’ve built trust through consistency, integrity, and community involvement.”
While there have been a lot of highlights of doing business so far, there have also been challenges to navigate. Weathering the pandemic was one major hurdle that brought unpredictable demand spikes and logistical issues, and now, tariffs could impact the cost structure of the lumber, steel, and imported goods that they sell.
“We do our best to absorb costs where we can and to communicate transparently with our customers when prices are affected,” Tyler explained. “Our goal is always to maintain affordability and reliability, even in a challenging trade environment.”
The team at Moscow and Pullman Building Supply counts it an honor to grow alongside a strong and supportive Idaho community.
“We’ve had the privilege of supplying materials for countless homes, businesses, and public projects across the region,” Tyler said. “Watching families and businesses thrive using products and support from our store is incredibly rewarding.”
To demonstrate their commitment to communities across the Gem State, Moscow and Pullman Building Supply donates to local schools, sponsors youth sports, supports community events, and helps with relief efforts during emergencies.
“We’re deeply invested in the well-being of our neighbors,” Tyler shared. “We take pride in being more than just a store — we’re a local partner in building stronger homes, families, and futures for our communities.”
Looking ahead, Moscow and Pullman Building Supply anticipates adapting its operations to effectively grow, while staying true to its roots. They aim to improve delivery capabilities and online services, expand in-store offerings, and are looking at ways they can mentor the next generation of employees and leaders who will carry on the company’s already strong legacy.
Tyler said, “We’re proud of our history, our people, and the role we play in helping our customers succeed in their projects. We don’t just sell materials — we build relationships.”
