Joshua Smith, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Pawspital Animal Hospital in Meridian, shares shares that looking back to his childhood, he didn’t know that he wanted to become a veterinarian in so many words — but everything in his life was pointing in that direction.

“I was always drawn to animals, curious about how to help them, and naturally took on a caring, empathetic role when they were around,” he explained. “Whether it was spending time with pets, asking questions at the vet’s office, or just being fascinated by the bond between people and animals, the path was quietly forming. I may not have had the title in mind then, but the heart behind it was already there.”

After graduating from the University of Tennessee, and working in clinics in Florida, California and Alabama, Smith knew he wanted to do his part to address the critical shortage of veterinarians in Idaho. Opening his own clinic last year has been incredibly rewarding so far, but it hasn’t been without some challenges and a steep learning curve.

“From building a strong team and creating efficient systems, to earning the trust of clients and ensuring the highest standard of care for our patients, it’s been a constant learning process,” he explained. “I’m about a year in now, and every day presents new lessons and opportunities for growth. What’s kept me grounded and confident throughout it all is the unwavering support of my wife. Her encouragement reminds me why I started this journey and helps me stay focused on doing what’s best for my team, my clients and the animals we care for.”

Smith is also passionate about education and mentorship ― especially locally where veterinary technician training programs are limited.

“My work is driven by a desire to make a lasting impact on both animal health and the lives of those I serve,” he said. “I aim to leave a positive, lasting influence on my field, ensuring that both the quality of care for animals and the education of veterinary professionals continue to improve.”

In a letter of recommendation, Karen Barbee wrote of Smith’s remarkable vision, leadership and commitment to both his profession and his community.

She said, “His contributions to the local community and his profession have already had a profound impact, and I am confident that his influence will continue to grow in the years to come.”
