Gas prices slowly cool as fall weather rolls in

As the seasons change, so do the prices in the gallon of gas. Temperatures are trending downward and fuel is following suit.

Though the change isn’t huge ― two cents on average to be exact ― prices have dipped downward over the past week, according to AAA Idaho. The travel agency stated that the average price for a gallon of gas in Idaho is $3.47, two cents lower than last week but the same price as a month ago and one cent more than this time last year.

Idaho currently ranks eighth most expensive in the United States, and the national average is $3.13 for a gallon of gas, seven cents lower than the same time in September and four cents lower than the same time in 2024.

“Fuel demand is on the decline, but a sharp spike in the cost of crude oil may have briefly disrupted a more seasonal pattern,” said Matthew Conde, AAA Idaho public affairs director. “Hopefully, falling gas prices will pick up speed as we head further into fall.”

Average prices throughout the state ranged from $3.33 per gallon in Idaho Falls to $3.50 in Boise.

As of Oct. 7, the cheapest gas in the state according to GasBuddy.com was found at Conoco on Nez Perce Road in Lewiston at $2.99 per gallon, Mobil and Chevron stations on Main Street and Exxon on Challis Street in Salmon, all at $3.05 per gallon.

However, Conde advised better fuel would help in the upkeep of a vehicle.

“Using top tier gasoline can help keep your vehicle in good condition,” he said. “Regular vehicle maintenance can make all the difference in fuel economy and engine performance.”

Seasonal maintenance performed by refineries could “profoundly affect” gasoline supply, which would impact prices in turn.
