For the third time in the past five years, Idaho has been named a Silver Shovel award winner for the state’s efforts to attract high-value investment projects that help create a significant number of new, high-paying jobs.
The award comes courtesy of Area Development, a leading trade publication that focuses on business expansion. Idaho also was also honored by the publication in both 2022 and 2023.
Factors used to determine Shovel Award winners includes data centered on job creation, capital investment, diversity of industry and overall economic strategy. Comparisons of criteria are made with others in the same population tier.
The Gem State’s recognition was based on multiple high-impact projects including Micron Technology’s $35 billion expansion, as well as significant investments from Chobani, Kai-
Tech (Nelson Integrated), Marathon Cheese, JTS, Pipeline Plastics, Timberline Helicopters and Tractor Supply Company.
“Idaho’s 2026 shovel is the story of a state landing the project of a generation, while steadily building a more diversified industrial base around it, said Andy Greiner, the publication’s editor.
Specifically, major financial investments from both Micron and Tractor Supply Company have helped position Idaho as a national leader in economic development. Area Development also recognized Micron’s massive expansion as a Manufacturing Project of the Year, and Tractor Supply Company’s $225 million investment in Nampa as a Project of the Year in the non-manufacturing category.
Tom Kealey, director of the Idaho Department of Commerce, called the award a “strong affirmation” of Idaho’s economic strength, competitiveness and commitment to growth.
“This recognition reflects the collective efforts of our communities, economic development partners and businesses working together to create opportunity, attract investment and advance prosperity across Idaho,” Kealey said.
