With more than three decades of work with Engineered Structures, Inc. (ESI), Neil Nelson has played an integral part in building its reputation as the largest Idaho-based construction company with revenues of more than $1 billion.

“My leadership style is forward-thinking and growth oriented,” he explained. “I trust our leaders and project teams to take ownership of their work while knowing I’m always available for guidance, support and clarity when needed. I strive to build a culture where accountability and trust go hand in hand. My vision is centered on continuous improvement — getting 1% better every day — because small, consistent progress is what moves our company and our people from good to great.”

ESI is consistently ranked in Engineering News Record’s Top 150 General Contractors nationwide, and Nelson credits much of that to guide his exceptional team of people to deliver exceptional projects.

He said, “Growing up on a ranch, I learned early that success requires grit, discipline and integrity. You don’t win by accident. You win by showing up every day and doing hard things well. With competition, [strategy and future-thinking] among my strengths, I am wired to anticipate what’s next and position our company ahead of it. That orientation has shaped how we lead ― not reacting to change but driving it.”

In nomination documents, Ben Quintana spoke of Nelson’s ability to drive a culture that promotes community, service and accountability.

“After joining the team in 2025, I quickly observed Neil’s strong work ethic, mental toughness and entrepreneurial spirit,” he shared. “With his 30 years of construction experience and natural leadership abilities he has led ESI to become a reputable, trustworthy and nationally recognized contractor.”

Nelson says that he has remained grounded in servant-leadership while never losing sight of the company’s vision.

“When I reflect on our history, what stands out most is not just our longevity, but the disciplined and intentional way we have grown,” he said. “That growth represents far more than revenue — it reflects expanded capabilities, greater operational complexity, broader geographic influence and a significantly deeper level of service to our customers.”

Looking ahead, Nelson is excited about continuing to focus on investing in training and technology so he and his team can keep up with today’s fast-paced business environment. He also plans on being intentional with continued learning, expanding his perspective through books, podcasts, executive forums and leadership conferences.

He said, “I firmly believe we can always learn and always grow. Complacency is the quiet enemy of influence.”
