See which predator is ranked as the deadliest in Idaho

Portraying Indiana Jones in the classic film “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Harrison Ford famously quipped, “I hate snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?”

Well, here’s why.

This year’s ranking of the deadliest animal for each of the 50 states, roughly one-quarter or 12 states are found to have some species of the reptile tabbed as its prime predator, according to a recent report from World Population Review.

Most prominent was a variety of rattlesnakes found throughout Arizona, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nevada, North Dakota and Oklahoma.

In Idaho, the grizzly bear topped the list, as it did in neighboring Montana and Washington. The North American black bear was No. 1 in Oregon, while black bears were also found to be predominant in Kentucky, Massachusetts, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Other wildlife such as bison hit the top spot in two states, South Dakota and Wyoming,  while Moose were tops in Colorado, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Whitetail deer were named the biggest culprits in Arkansas, Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

In the far reaches of Alaska, dogs were deemed most problematic, with the coyote leading the pack in Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey and Utah. But in New Mexico, the mountain lion was found to pose the biggest threat.

In deep and murky waters, bull sharks are most concerning for those living in Maryland and Virginia, though alligators pose the biggest threat to residents of Texas and Florida.

An unusual species to wind its way onto the list was the Yellow-bellied sea snake, considered the biggest problem for residents of Hawaii. Another form of marine life, the Portuguese man o’ war, which bears a strong resemblance to a jellyfish because of its bell and tentacles, creates the most danger in both Delaware and North Carolina. These creatures are also found in abundance throughout the Hawaiian Islands when blown towards shore by strong trade winds.

Other venomous creatures not typically thought of as animals also made the list. The mosquito is enemy No. 1 for New Yorkers, but ticks lead the list in Missouri. And the Black Widow spider crawled to the top in both Alabama and Nebraska.
