Born to migrant workers who moved from Guanajuato, Mexico, Monze Stark-Magaña is a first-generation college graduate who today, as the dean of Enrollment Services for the College of Southern Idaho, is able to help students enroll in college so they too can realize their educational dreams.
“As a first-generation Latina, I empathize with the challenges students face in obtaining a degree. I have connected prospective students with mentors, understanding the unique needs influenced by cultural beliefs, financial stability, familial support and citizenship status,” she said. “I am deeply convinced that my purpose in this world is to dismantle barriers, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to pursue an education.”
Stark-Magaña holds a master’s in adult organization learning and leadership and a bachelor’s in sociology, both from the University of Idaho.
She said it’s her mother’s strength that inspires her to become a beacon of inspiration for women in the field of education.
“My mother stands as the paramount influence in my life, having arrived in this country with limited resources and now proudly owning a Mexican store in Hailey, Idaho,” she said. “I am determined to follow in her footsteps, not only as a reflection of her strength but also as a testament to the potential for impactful change within my chosen industry.”
Jessica Tadeo McFadden, with College of Southern Idaho’s Enrollment Services, said Stark-Magaña played a pivotal role in shaping the development of the nascent Enrollment Services Department and said she excels as a mentor.
“She has shown a deep commitment to the education and well-being of students, advocating for opportunities that empower the next generation to thrive in their academic pursuits,” McFadden said. “She is a visionary leader, an inspiring mentor and a dedicated advocate for both the professional and student communities.”
Rosey Alberdi is the Bridge to Success program coordinator at the College of Southern Idaho. She said Stark-Magaña possesses myriad qualities that make her stand out, including an unwavering work ethic.
“Her enduring enthusiasm, unwavering dedication and steadfast moral compass are qualities that will undoubtedly continue to enrich any environment she finds herself in,” Alberdi said. “Her ability to build strong, meaningful relationships underscores her empathetic nature, and she consistently goes above and beyond, extending a helping hand to all who seek assistance in her office.”
Stark-Magaña said that her mission remains clear: She is devoted to breaking down obstacles and opening doors for students.
“This is not just a career path for me,” she said. “It’s a lifelong commitment rooted in the belief that education is the most powerful tool for change and empowerment.”
