Data center creates first internet exchange in Idaho

A Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based data center firm, with centers in Idaho, is creating the first internet exchange in the Gem State.
Involta, which offers data centers, hybrid IT and cloud-forward consulting services, is working to deliver on its commitment to bring connectivity to areas where it is most needed. It announced recently that it is launching two nonprofit internet exchanges “to enhance local (internet) connectivity and reduce costs.”
The Idaho Internet Exchange is a community-driven initiative which seeks to create more internet access points in the state. It unites internet service providers, transport carriers, mobile and content providers and internet users exchange internet traffic inexpensively through what’s known as a shared switch fabric hosted in Involta’s Boise data center.
Connecting users and ISPs directly eliminates the need for third-party internet carriers, according to a statement issued by Involta.
“This initiative is dedicated to bridging the digital divide in a region known for its scenic beauty but challenging connectivity issues,” the company stated.
Involta is creating a similar exchange in Arizona known as the Tucson Internet Exchange.
