Access to Justice Idaho will host its annual Justice Uncorked fundraiser Sept. 17 at Split Rail Winery in Garden City, bringing together Idaho’s legal, business and philanthropic communities to support free civil legal services for residents who cannot afford private representation.
Proceeds will benefit Idaho Legal Aid Services, the Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program and Disability Rights Idaho, which collectively help Idahoans navigate civil legal matters involving housing, domestic violence, disability rights, public benefits, consumer protection and elder issues.
“Justice Uncorked is about making sure an Idahoan facing eviction, abuse, a disability-related legal issue or another life-changing crisis is not denied meaningful legal help simply because they cannot afford an attorney,” said Chris Bowers, event director.
Unlike criminal defendants, people facing civil legal problems generally have no guaranteed right to a court-appointed attorney, leaving survivors seeking protection orders, seniors facing exploitation, tenants challenging unlawful evictions and people with disabilities contesting loss of services to navigate the legal system alone.
The need is acute in Idaho, particularly in rural areas. American Bar Association data shows 29 of Idaho’s 44 counties have fewer than one lawyer per 1,000 residents, with some counties reporting no resident attorneys. Housing costs compound the pressure: A worker earning Idaho’s $7.25 minimum wage would need to work approximately 154 hours per week to afford a modest two-bedroom rental without spending more than 30% of income on housing.
The evening will include a VIP wine-tasting experience, catered food, live music and a silent auction. A limited number of tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available. Donations are also accepted year-round at tinyurl.com/Donate2Uncorked.
