Excellence in Finance – Seth Ruhter – College of Idaho/Arthur Berry and Company

Seth Ruhter, assistant professor at the College of Idaho and business intermediary at Arthur Berry and Company, is responsible for teaching courses in economics, corporate finance, investments, advanced corporate finance, financial institutions and business valuation at the college. However, he also provides mergers, acquisitions and business intermediary services to main street and lower middle market businesses at Arthur Berry and Company.

Juggling both jobs and careers is a result of both his education and career background. Ruhter’s academic credentials include a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of Florida, with a dissertation focusing on private company returns. His practical experience is equally impressive, having served as a senior policy expert at the Federal Reserve Board and vice president of risk at Goldman Sachs.

“My dual role as both a finance professor and a practitioner gives me a unique perspective and skill set,” Ruhter said. “The practical experience I gain from working in business valuation and [mergers and acquisitions] directly informs and enhances my teaching. Similarly, my academic background helps me explain complex financial topics more clearly to clients.”

As a professor, Ruther is known for his ability to break down intricate financial concepts into digestible topics, ensuring that students of all levels grasp the material, said Dr. Marilyn Martin Melchiorre, professor and chair of the Business and Accounting Department at the College of Idaho.

“He employs a variety of teaching methods, including case studies, interactive discussions and real-world applications,” she said.

In his role at Arthur Berry and Company, Ruhter focuses on facilitating complex business transactions.

“Seth has shown a remarkable ability to facilitate complex transactions with skill, efficiency and integrity,” said Randy Limani, principal at Arthur Berry and Company. “His approach to analyzing financial statements and understanding market conditions has been invaluable in guiding informed decision-making.”

Ruhter is also an accredited member in business valuation with the American Society of Appraisers and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation. His research focuses on private markets, mergers and acquisitions, private company valuation and financial institutions.

Ruhter’s philosophy centers on generosity and creating an enjoyable atmosphere for those around him.

“I believe that by embracing a spirit of giving and kindness, we can foster meaningful connections and contribute positively to the lives of others,” he said.
